Learn more about Cannabis for ADHD, Hemp for ADHD, & CBD for ADHD

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, affects a little over 4 percent of the adult population. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is fairly common, especially among children and young adults. Common symptoms of ADHD include trouble sitting still, trouble focusing, impulsive behavior and hyperactive behavior, among many other less common symptoms.

Most people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are treated with pharmaceutical medications such as Ritalin, Adderall and Vyvanse. While these medications can be helpful for some, many sufferers of ADHD are looking for more natural alternatives to help keep their symptoms under control. Because cannabis is known to promote relaxation and improved focus in some users, many are switching out their pharmaceutical prescriptions for cannabis flower or edibles.

How Does Cannabis Help With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

Because cannabis is still federally illegal, research on cannabis for this disorder is very limited. Scientists and doctors are still working to understand how cannabis affects the brain and its effects on ADHD symptoms.

Focus

An inability to stay focused on tasks is a very common symptom of ADHD. In some cases, certain cannabis products have been shown to improve focus. Cannabis helps to boost dopamine levels in our brains, causing a euphoric effect that can help improve creativity and focus. But, not all cannabis products are created equal.

While lower-mid doses of THC can be helpful for some users to improve focus and productivity, higher THC doses can have the opposite effect. Think about a time when you’ve taken too many hits from your vape pen or eaten too many edibles. The last thing you want to be is productive and focused, right? Usually, the couch lock starts to set in.

We suggest starting with a light dose of THC, or try a ratio of different cannabinoids for a personalized experience. Some of our favorite focus-based products are the delta-8 and THC-V edibles and vape cartridges, designed specifically for focus and productivity.

Relaxation

For many users with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, sitting still and relaxing for longer periods of time can be difficult. In this case, higher doses of certain cannabis products can be very helpful. When you want to calm your mind and body down, a stronger dose of THC can be very helpful.

A “stronger” dose of THC can look different for everyone. Everyone has a different tolerance to THC and processes its effects differently. If you are new to cannabis, vaping or taking a nano-emulsified quick release edible can be a great option to gauge your tolerance. These products kick in much faster than regular edibles so you can control your experience.

CBD and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

If you don’t enjoy the intoxicating effects of THC, there is scientific evidence that suggests CBD can also be helpful for those with ADHD. One 2020 study suggests that higher doses of CBD, along with trace amounts of other cannabinoids, allowed some patients to take fewer ADHD medications.

Another 2021 study of over 1,700 college students suggests that cannabis, CBD specifically has helped mitigate certain ADHD symptoms such as impulsivity and hyperactivity. Many students also reported that cannabis helped lessen side effects caused by pharmaceutical ADHD medications, such as anxiety and irritability.

Cannabis and ADHD Medication

There is limited research on how cannabis may or may not interact with pharmaceutical ADHD medications such as Adderall. Our advice would be to talk with your healthcare provider about cannabis use and start with something mild and non-intoxicating like CBD.

While there is still so much research to be done on cannabis and ADHD, it may be a safer, more natural alternative to pharmaceutical medications. But, everyone’s situation is different. Please talk with your healthcare provider before changing your medication regimen.
