What is THC-O / THC O?

THC-O or THC O Acetate

Learn more about THC-O (THC O) or THC-O Acetate a legal hemp-derived, cannabinoid.

Following the popularity of delta-8 THC and delta-10 THC, THC-O seems to be the next popular cannabinoid hitting the scene. In a previous article, we provided an overview of some of these new cannabinoids hitting the scene, mainly HHC, Delta 6a10a and THC-O. Out of the three, THC-O has peaked the most curiosity out of our customer base.

THC-O is short for THC-O Acetate. It is a synthetic, hemp-derived compound that is quickly gaining popularity in illegal cannabis states like North Carolina. Because it is still derived from hemp, THC O is protected under the 2018 Federal Farm Bill. According to initial research, THC-O is supposedly three times stronger than Delta-9 THC.

How is THC-O (THC O) Made?

THC-O is made by adding acetic anhydride to THC molecules through a chemical reaction. Basically, scientists extract delta-8 THC from CBD isolate, and then add acetic anhydride to make THC-O. Because THC-O is synthetically produced, it is raising some concerns among cannabis retailers and producers.

As with any cannabis-derived product, research on side effects, long-term use and user experience is very limited. But, just like your CBD and THC products, it is always best to source your products from a reputable producer. Luckily, we ensure all of our THC-O products are third-party lab tested and contain no toxic additives.

THC-O (THC O) Effects and Potential Benefits

THC O has been nicknamed the “psychedelic” or “spiritual” cannabinoid due to its borderline hallucinogenic effects. Many users report very mild visuals similar to a psilocybin experience, albeit after a hefty dose of THC O. Because of THC-O’s high potency compared to delta-8 and delta-9 THC, users with higher tolerances to cannabis may enjoy its effects.

So far, most users report feelings of euphoria, creativity and an overall heavy-hitting buzz. Because THC O is an acetate and is absorbed differently than traditional cannabinoids, it may take longer to feel the effects, so our advice is to go low and slow. The general consensus is to wait about 30 minutes after taking THC O for the onset of effects.

Stay Safe and Go Slow

As of 2021, North Carolina hasn’t tried to crack down on THC O or any other new hemp-derived product. But, due to the lack of regulation of cannabis products, there is a wide range of qualityout there. If you’re interested in trying THC-O, please source your products from a legitimate dispensary or cannabis producer. We currently carry THC-O vape pens from 3-Chi, one of the most reputable cannabis brands in the country.

As with any new cannabis product, start slow until you know how your body responds. If you have questions about THC-O and its effects, please visit our Raleigh storefront for an in-person consultation or give us a call anytime.
